The Detroit Institute Of Arts is a truly amazing venue to work with. So many different spaces / layouts make for a dynamic and visually engaging environment.
Luma Detroit was brought on this project to assist the artist Gabriel Hall of LIGHTBENDER STUDIO, who made all the wonderful visual animations that were projection mapped on the different atriums. Kresge Court / Prentis Court & Walter B. Ford Great Hall.
Luma Detroit was in charge of getting all the video signals to more than 18 projectors throughout the facility. In addition to running power to all projectors. Video signals were carried over high-definition serial digital interface cables. More commonly known as HD-SDI cable.
These cables along with high-capacity power cables with voltages ranging from 120 volts to 240 volts are what brought this spectacle to life. Projectors were fed over these HD-SDI cables from computers hidden in strategic locations throughout the space. Some of these cables spanned distances over 250 feet.
The projectors used to display the images range from something you would expect to see in a school classroom. All the way up to roughly the size and weight of a full-sized refrigerator. Requiring more than 6 people to move.
The output or brightness of the projectors can only compare output as ranging from a garden hose. To a waterfall in terms of raw output with 8 of the projects outputting over 30 thousand lumens.
In order to complete the setup and be ready in time for the event. A day before setup was required. To set up projectors, calibrate their position and lenses to the space. Along with running cables for power / video & configuring computers.
The DIA is an active museum and great care was given to respect the space.
From every aspect of bringing equipment in and out of the facility. To setting up alongside active members of the public visiting. Great care is taken to make equipment blend in. And not disrupt visitors.
We highly recommend you head over to Gabriel’s website and look at his other fantastic works of art. https://lghtbndr.com/
